My daughter-in-law abandoned her twin babies after my son died, and I raised them for twenty years. Then, on their twentieth birthday, she showed up at my door in designer clothes and acted like she had simply been away for the weekend.
My son died when his twin daughters were three months old.
A couple of months later, their mother disappeared too.
Not physically at first.
Kayla came to my house one afternoon carrying both babies, two diaper bags, and a face that looked exhausted.
“Can you watch them for a few hours?” she asked.
I didn’t hesitate.
I thought she needed sleep.
Maybe groceries.
Maybe an afternoon to remember she was twenty-four and grieving.
She kissed Jennifer’s forehead, adjusted Lizzie’s blanket, and walked out.
Six hours passed.
Then eight.
At midnight, I called.
No answer.
At two in the morning, she finally called me back.
There was music behind her.
“I’ve been thinking,” she said.
My stomach tightened.
“My life.”
I looked toward the bassinets in my living room.
“Your daughters are here.”
“When are you coming back?”
She sighed.
“I’m not.”
I thought I’d misheard her.
“I want a better life, Margaret. Without kids, it’ll be easier to get married again. I’ll finally find myself a rich man and live the life I deserve.”
I couldn’t speak.
Then she added, “You always wanted to be involved anyway.”
“Kayla, these are your babies.”
“And they’re your granddaughters.”
“It does now.”
She hung up.
I called again.
