Can a white coating on glasses really be removed? That depends on three things.

Yes, in the vast majority of cases, the white coating can be removed, but it all depends on the cause.

These three key factors will determine whether your jars can still be saved:

  1. Type of pavement (limescale vs. glass corrosion)
    This is by far the most important factor. The white coating has two completely different causes:

Limescale (mineral deposits): These are caused by hard water or incorrect salt dosing in the dishwasher. They settle on the glass surface. โ†’ Easy to remove.
Glass corrosion (glass rot): This is caused by a combination of water that is too soft/oversoftened, high rinsing temperatures and aggressive cleaning agents. The glass structure will be permanently damaged and scratched. โ†’ Cannot be removed.
Quick test: Put some vinegar on a glass and run your finger over it. If the coating disappears or can be rubbed off, it is limescale deposits. If the glass remains matt and damp, it is unfortunately permanent corrosion.

  1. Acidity of the cleaning agent (pH value)
    Conventional washing-up liquid or hot water do not help with limescale deposits. Minerals such as calcium and magnesium require an acidic reaction:

Vinegar (acetic acid): Dilute vinegar and warm water in a 1:1 ratio, soak the jars for 15-30 minutes, then rinse.
Citric acid: Dissolve 2โ€“3 tablespoons of citric acid in hot water and bathe the jars in it. Citric acid does not smell as strong as vinegar and produces excellent results.
