At the Jewish cemetery in Łódź, he used historical records to identify graves and helped restore more than 3,000 of them. He also traveled repeatedly throughout Poland, helping locate Jewish graves and preserve cemeteries and sites of memory.

What began as a search for one family member’s grave became a lifelong mission.
His work eventually earned national recognition. In 2012, Widawski was chosen to light a torch at Israel’s official Holocaust Remembrance Day ceremony at Yad Vashem.
And when asked years later what he considered his revenge against the Nazis, his answer was simple but incredibly powerful:
“My revenge on the Nazis is that they lost, and we have the State of Israel. We are free and strong, and no one will ever be able to destroy us again.”
In 2018, Widawski returned to Poland with 31 members of his family to retrace the milestones of his extraordinary life. The following year, he celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by family, rabbis and friends.
He lived long enough to see a fifth generation of descendants.
Following his death, Israeli President Isaac Herzog paid tribute to a man whose life had become a symbol of survival and remembrance.
“When he was 104, I had the privilege of hosting Yehuda at the President’s Residence together with his wonderful family. I was moved to hear his life story and about his decision to return to Poland years after immigrating to Israel in order to search for his grandmother’s grave.”
“That search became his life’s work,” Herzog continued. “For decades, Yehuda worked to locate and restore Jewish cemeteries and graves in Poland and helped identify more than 3,000 graves.”
“Yehuda once said that his revenge on the Nazis was that they lost, and that we have the State of Israel,” Herzog said. “Indeed, his life was a remarkable testament to the victory of life, remembrance and national rebirth. May Yehuda’s memory be blessed.”
At 107, Yehuda Aharon Widawski is gone.
But the graves he helped restore, the stories he carried and the generations that came after him ensure that the people the Nazis tried to erase will never simply disappear from history.
