But Miller’s story didn’t end when the biggest years of his career were behind him.
He returned to touring in the 1990s and continued performing for audiences in Texas and overseas. He even traveled to Sweden in 2015 at the age of 85 and remained active in music well into his later years.
His final full-length album, A Friend Remembered: My Tribute To George Jones, was released in 2020.
Looking back on their friendship, Country Music Hall of Famer Bill Anderson remembered meeting Miller during a tour in 1959.
“The first major tour I worked following my move to Nashville in 1959 was across western Canada with several other new country artists…among them Frankie Miller. He had a hit record with ‘Blackland Farmer,’ and I had just come out with ‘Ninety-Nine Years.’ Most of the fans had no idea who either of us was, but we formed a friendship back then that has lasted to this day. He’s been one of my favorite artists and favorite people for a long, long time.”
Miller leaves behind his daughters, Sandi Wilson and Lori Chaney, their husbands, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
For generations of country fans, though, his legacy will live on every time the familiar sound of “Blackland Farmer” fills the room.
