Palin’s story at this point is not a political argument. It is the experience of a woman whose expectations were overturned by a message she had not wanted to receive. Whatever the public already believed about her, those beliefs could not make the change less personal.
The years ahead could not be recovered by returning to the screen and reading the email differently. They would have to be built from what remained: her identity beyond the marriage, her responsibilities to her family, and the choices still available to her. The ending was imposed on the life she had imagined; how she continued living would become a different part of her story.
