Margaret let out a dry laugh.
—This is my house.
—And that’s my daughter —my father said.
—My granddaughter.
—And a senior Army officer whom you and your guests treated as if she had no voice, rank or protection.
Margaret looked me up and down.
—Nobody knew what she was…
I went ahead.
—That phrase doesn’t help.
The room was silent.
—They didn’t need to know my rank to respect my daughter.
Eleanor Vance sat down slowly, crossed her hands on her cane, and looked at Margaret with old disappointment.
—Margaret, you were always a snob.
—But this was vulgar.
The word vulgar hits harder than any legal threat.
For a woman like Margaret Pembroke, vulgar was a social condemnation.
Her husband, Charles Pembroke, then appeared from the hallway.
A tall, quiet, white-haired man who always seemed absent until the beads needed a signature.

My father turned towards him.

Charles hesitated.

Denise Harper looked up from her notebook.

Charles turned red.
Margaret pointed to the social worker.
—I will not allow a county official to come to my house to judge a family prank. Family protection
Mayor Reeves opened a folder.
—Mrs. Pembroke, in addition to the civil and family matter, there is a possible threat directed at a minor dependent on an active duty military officer.
—Nora’s chain of command was informed.
—And his conduct was reviewed as possible harassment, intimidation and hostile environment against a military family.
Margaret paled.
—Chain of command?
My father spoke in a low voice.
—You thought Nora was an unbacked intruder.
—Was wrong.
Wesley sat in a chair, as if his legs had stopped supporting him.
—Nora, I didn’t know I was going to get this far.
I looked at him.
—He came far when your mother put her hand close to June.
—She went far when you decided to protect the party atmosphere before your daughter.
He closes his eyes.
He didn’t cry.
He was still too used to thinking that the real pain was what made Margaret uncomfortable.
Mayor Reeves connected a tablet to the solarium screen.

The bell rang again.
This time no one laughed.
The screen showed the faces of the guests.
The laughter.

My voice saying:

Yours answering:

Then his hand towards June.
My step back.
My daughter’s crying.
And Wesley calling it a bad joke.
The recording ended.
The solarium was colder than the marble.
Margaret pursed her lips.
—I didn’t know he was recording.
—That doesn’t help either —Eleanor said.
The social worker spoke calmly.
