What Is Solar Retinopathy?
Solar retinopathy occurs when intense light damages cells in the retina, particularly in an area called the macula that is responsible for sharp central vision.
Symptoms may not appear immediately. Within hours or sometimes after a delay, a person may notice:
- A blurry or distorted area in the center of their vision
- A dark or blind spot
- Difficulty reading or recognizing details
- Changes in color perception
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Distorted straight lines
In some cases, the injury can improve gradually. In others, retinal damage may be permanent.
The Damage May Not Be Obvious at First
One of the most concerning aspects of solar retinopathy is that someone may initially feel completely fine.
There may be no dramatic pain and no obvious external injury to the eye. The problem occurs inside the eye, where specialized retinal cells can be damaged by intense light.
This is why simply looking away after a few seconds does not guarantee that no harm occurred. The risk depends on factors such as the intensity of the sunlight, duration of exposure, and whether the person was using appropriate eye protection.
How to Watch an Eclipse Safely
Ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient protection for viewing a solar eclipse.
People who want to observe the Sun should use eclipse glasses or solar viewers that comply with recognized safety standards and are specifically designed for direct solar viewing. They should also follow the manufacturer’s instructions and inspect the viewing device for damage before using it.
Another safe option is indirect viewing, such as using a pinhole projector. This allows you to observe the eclipse without looking directly at the Sun.
