James was reportedly accompanied by his wife, Melody Carole Wilson, and her daughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson. There were no survivors.
The circumstances surrounding the crash became the subject of an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). As with any aviation accident, investigators must examine multiple factors, including weather, aircraft condition, flight data, pilot actions, and the physical evidence from the crash site.
The tragedy was especially devastating because James was not only a celebrated songwriter but also a member of a family whose lives were lost in the same accident.
