The location of floating debris does not necessarily mark the exact point of impact. Ocean currents, wind and waves can move lightweight wreckage considerable distances before it is detected.

Officials and maritime experts said the suspected search area could be around 3,000 metres, or 9,800 feet, deep. Locating a fuselage or flight recorders at such depths may require specialist sonar equipment, remotely operated underwater vehicles and a detailed analysis of currents and tracking information.

Rough seas associated with seasonal weather have further obstructed the operation. Search aircraft may have difficulty identifying small objects through high waves, while naval vessels must balance thorough coverage with the safety of their crews.

What is known about the aircraft

The missing aircraft was a Boeing 737-400 converted freighter, registration AP-BOI. It was approximately 27 years old.

The jet was originally delivered as a passenger aircraft to Russia’s Aeroflot in 1999 and was converted for cargo operations in 2012. It entered service with K2 Airways in 2024 and was reportedly the airline’s only operational aircraft.

The aircraft should not be confused with the Boeing 737 MAX. The 737-400 belongs to an older generation of the 737 family and uses CFM56 engines manufactured by CFM International, a joint venture involving GE Aerospace and Safran.

The aircraft’s age alone does not establish the cause of an accident. Commercial aircraft can remain in service for decades when properly maintained and operated under an approved inspection programme. Investigators will need to examine the maintenance history, aircraft loading, crew actions, weather conditions, navigation systems and any recovered structural components.

Navigation problem does not yet explain the crash

The crew’s report of a navigation-system malfunction is one of the most important known details, but it does not prove that the navigation issue caused the aircraft to go down.

A navigation fault may affect an aircraft’s ability to determine its position or follow a planned route. By itself, however, such a problem would not normally explain an almost vertical descent.

The pilots’ struggle could have involved additional technical failures, loss of control, misleading instrument information or another sequence of events not yet known publicly. Air accidents usually result from several interacting factors rather than a single isolated failure.

There is currently no verified evidence supporting online speculation about sabotage, an explosion, deliberate action, cargo movement or engine failure. Publishing any such explanation as fact would be premature.

International investigation assistance

Pakistan is responsible for leading the investigation under international aviation rules because the accident occurred near its territory and involved a Pakistan-registered aircraft.

The United States National Transportation Safety Board appointed an accredited representative to assist the Pakistani investigation. Technical advisers from Boeing, GE Aerospace and the US Federal Aviation Administration were also expected to participate.

The investigation will depend heavily on locating the aircraft’s flight-data recorder and cockpit-voice recorder. These devices may reveal the aircraft’s speed, attitude, control inputs, system warnings and crew communications during the final minutes.

No reliable public report has confirmed that either recorder has been recovered.

Investigations into accidents at sea can take substantially longer than land-based investigations. The search team must first establish the likely impact area, locate the main wreckage and safely retrieve components before detailed laboratory analysis can begin.

Why the original breaking report needs updating

 

The initial social-media statement correctly identified several central facts: a K2 Airways Boeing 737-400 cargo aircraft had departed the UAE for Karachi, experienced a rapid descent, disappeared from tracking and triggered a major search operation.

However, three clarifications are necessary.

First, the exact body of water was the Arabian Sea, although describing it as part of the Indian Ocean is not broadly wrong.

Second, the aircraft is no longer wholly missing. Pieces of wreckage have been recovered and officially identified, confirming that it crashed at sea.

Third, reports should distinguish between missing crew members and confirmed deaths. Although the circumstances are extremely serious and officials have expressed condolences, the five crew members had not been formally declared dead in the latest verified reporting.

Search continues as families await answers

The recovery of debris has provided investigators with their first physical evidence, but the most important questions remain unanswered.

Search teams still need to locate the crew, the main fuselage and the flight recorders. Investigators must then determine why a routine cargo flight experienced extreme altitude changes only minutes after reporting a navigation problem.

Until that work is completed, the cause of the crash remains unknown.
